What Is A Pastor?

Prior to going to church, I had no idea what being a pastor consisted of. I knew they taught the Bible on Sunday mornings, but had no other clue as to what else they did. After going to church for a period of time and getting to know my current pastor, I now have a different view of what they do. I also feel I will one day be a pastor. Since I feel that I am going to be a pastor, I decided to write my paper on what being a pastor is all about, and what I think I will have to do one day. I went online to different career sites to get different descriptions of what a pastor is, as well as interviewed a couple of pastors from my church. The two pastors that I interviewed are, Senior Pastor, Joe Coleman, and Assistant Pastor, Jim Doub. After reading this paper I hope you also have a better understanding of what being a pastor is all about, and what it involves.
(Duties)
Some of the duties of a pastor is to teach the Bible to your congregation, counsel the people, and help individuals who are going through a tough period of time in their life. These things aren’t done like other 9 to 5 jobs. It is, as Pastor Joe Coleman says, a 24 hour a day 7 day a week job. Pastor Jim Doub says, it includes teaching in nursing homes, missions, home visits, as well as going to the hospital when someone is sick. A pastor can plan his day out, but he also has to be willing to change at the last minute and do something else, when someone is in need of their help. They also need to have enough time reserved to study and prepare their message for each service that they teach. If you don’t prepare, your message will not flow and the people listening may have a hard time following along.

Training really depends on the denomination that the pastor is with. Some require you to go to seminary, others require a degree. My church only requires that it be a calling from God. Calvary Chapel does have different Bible colleges that you can attend, but it is not a requirement. In fact, a lot of people go to Bible college and never become a pastor. They get their degree, and do some missionary work while in college, but that is it. Career Planner says that you need to be trained in Philosophy, Theology, Psychology, English Language, Therapy, Counseling, and Communications. Assistant Pastor Jim Doub, on the other hand says, “Since being a ‘pastor’ is a calling from God and not man, education, in the formal sense, is not a pre-requisite.”

Salary, as with training, have to do with what denomination the minister is with. Every group has a different salary for the pastors. According to Michigan Department of Career Development, “Earnings for Clergy Members depend on the particular denomination, the size and financial status of the individual congregation, or the type of organization for which they work.” Pastor Joe Coleman points out that in some instances, there is a ‘starting salary,’ but not always. There are times when a pastor doesn’t make enough money from the church to support himself or his family, that he has to roll up his sleeves and get a second job. There are even some pastors that don’t get paid at all for being a pastor.
(Job Outlook)
The job outlook for this job is good. As long as there are religious people, there will be a need for religious teachers. Even though there may be a lot of jobs as “religious leaders,” you are still limited depending on which religion you are. As Michigan Department of Career Development has shown, an average of 130 annual openings is expected, with 60 due to growth and 70 due to replacement of clergy who retire, die or leave the active ministry for other reasons. Additional openings may occur as Clergy members change positions or occupations. As Assistant Pastor Jim Doub explains that it is not like working any other job, it is up to God when a person should step down from the full time ministry, to retire. But once you have served as a pastor, you never really stop serving God. You are just not doing it in a formal way anymore. People will still need someone to talk to, help them in al different ways and they will still turn to you.

Having received this additional info, I do believe that this job is for me. Not because of the salary, or for the title, but because I want to help people and I believe that I can do just that in this wonderful job. I will be able to use my skills and personality to help others with different things that they may be going through. I always want to help others, I believe in doing the right thing, as well as putting other first, and I love learning about the Bible. This is why I believe that God will be able to use me when the time is right. I am studying my Bible on my own, listening to others that I like who teach the Bible, and reading books that teach me about the Bible. I am preparing myself by getting a 2 year degree and then possibly go to Bible college to finish my 4 year degree. I feel the education will help me prepare my sermons, meet deadlines, and manage my time with more then one thing. I am also learning how to communicate with others. I am not sure yet where it will lead me. I understand that I will probably have to move and I am willing to do that, but until then I will just continue to prepare myself for what lies ahead.

What Is A Pastor?

Career Research Paper After A Little Work, Needs More...

What do you think the answer is when someone asks you what a pastor; minister; or cleryman is? I already know pretty well, but I believe I am going to be a pastor so I want want more information about the training, duties, salary, and the job outlook for this job.

The training has a lot to do with which religion you are with. Calvary Chapel’s way, which is a non-denominational church, is that a person has to be called by God. According to Pastor Joe Coleman, “God raises up men from within His church who have proven themselves to be; ‘of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit, (Born again, John 3:3) wisdom (in God's word, the Bible) who are appointed over the church business. Men that even though some may be perceived as “untrained and unlearned”, have been with Jesus’ (Acts 4:13).” Also, Pastor Jim Doub, another Calvary Chapel pastor shows similarly that, “Since being a ‘pastor’ is a calling from God and not man, education, in the formal sense, is not a pre-requisite, however nearly all pastors I know have at least a B.A. and many have been through seminary. To be a pastor with Calvary Chapel requires an obvious calling of God and a recognition by the ‘church’ of the call. I have a B.A. in Bible from Simpson Bible college but 90% of my training has been hearing the Word through teaching and preaching in churches and personal study. There are denominations that require seminary and even a doctorate. That is not God's requirement. His requirement is that we have a personal relationship with Him through Jesus Christ (Romans 10:9-10).” Others, such as clergymen, do need to get training in certain areas. Career Planner shows that a clergymen needs, “Philosophy and Theology: Knowledge of different philosophical systems and religions. This includes their basic principles, values, ethics, ways of thinking, customs, practices, and their impact on human culture. Education and Training: Knowledge of principles and methods for curriculum and training design, teaching and instruction for individuals and groups, and the measurement of training effects. Psychology: Knowledge of human behavior and performance; individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; learning and motivation; psychological research methods; and the assessment and treatment of behavioral and affective disorders. English Language: Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Therapy and Counseling: Knowledge of principles, methods, and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions, and for career counseling and guidance. And Communications and Media: Knowledge of media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods. This includes alternative ways to inform and entertain via written, oral, and visual media.”

When it comes to the working conditions or “duties” is similar when it comes to clergymen or Calvary Chapel pastors. Joe Coleman explains that, “The working conditions and duties of a pastor are actually two different subjects; Working conditions have no boundaries. 7 days a week, 24 hours a day, wherever Jesus leads us. Whenever there are needs in the flock of God. The duties of the pastor are to ‘feed His sheep’ (John 21:15) to love, tend, nurture His sheep, and equip them for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ (Eph 4:12). Ministry is not a job, it is a calling. (1 Tim 2:7)” Pastor Jim Doub shows from an assistant pastor’s position that, “As an assistant pastor I am to "assist" the pastor in any way he needs. This includes teaching or preaching when he needs or is away; teaching in other venues i.e., nursing homes and missions. I visit those who are ill or in need in their homes or hospitals, visit and or call the elderly and widows, help the elderly with financial and physical needs. I spend as much time as possible studying the Bible for my own personal growth and to be able to teach others; to make sure the church building is ready for services on Sunday and Wednesday. I attend Elders meetings and do the work of a financial officer of the church. Counseling is another part of the ministry of any pastor. It is my job to take care of making sure the church has adequate insurance. In other words anything the Senior Pastor or the secretary don't do, I do. It is a joy to serve!” Michigan Department of Career Development explains that, “Working conditions for members of the clergy depend on the type of work they do. Most Clergy work under little supervision and plan their schedules according to the needs of their congregations. Some serve large congregations that may be more structured. Clergy members serving large congregations may work as, or with assistants. Clergy who teach generally work under a limited amount of supervision. Those private organizations may be supervised by others or may supervise others.

After searching for this job, it is clear that it is hard to say what the starting and maximum salaries are for pastors, ministers, and clergymen. Joe Coleman shows that, “When God calls a pastor, He equips him, guides him and provides for him in many ways. In some instances, there is a ‘starting salary,’ but not
always. There are times when a pastor has to roll up his sleeves and work, just as the apostle Paul did as a tent maker. Other times God gives the minister his daily bread, and the pastor must rely on God for his daily provision. ‘Where God guides, God provides.’ Even as David wrote in Psalm 37 the Lord never forsakes His people. Ministry is not a place to get rich, but a place to enrich the lives of others. I do believe there is a ‘maximum salary.’ And that it is important not [to] live above the income level of the people or culture in which you live, as to be a stumbling block to them. Everything Jesus had here on earth was borrowed. From the fishes and loaves He received from a little lad, to the tunic which He wore. From the pillow upon which He laid His head, to the tomb in which He was buried. This earth was not His home, nor is it ours who belong to Him. (John 14:2,3).” Michigan Department of Career Development explains that, “Earnings for Clergy Members depend on the particular denomination, the size and financial status of the individual congregation, or the type of organization for which they work. The age, experience, learning, and reputation of the individual also affects income.”

It is interesting to see that it depends on whether it’s a Calvary Chapel Church or clergymen. The Calvary Chapel pastor, Jim Doub explains that, “Until the Lord takes us "home" we are here to serve! There will always be a place to serve Him! This is not like working for the telephone company, which I did for 30 years, it is up to God when a person should step down from the full time ministry but serving nevers ends.” Where as Michigan Department of Career Development says that, “There will be keen competition for Clergy positions in most established Protestant congregations. Favorable employment opportunities are expected for Rabbis, especially for those who seek work in congregations particularly in small communities and with large groups of retirees. The Catholic Church, however, is actively recruiting candidates for the priesthood. This is due to declining enrollment in Roman Catholic seminaries along with an increase in the total Catholic population. Clergy members willing to work in rural areas should have relatively favorable employment opportunities. Employment of Clergy in Michigan is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2005. An average of 130 annual openings is expected, with 60 due to growth and 70 due to replacement of clergy who retire, die or leave the active ministry for other reasons. Additional openings may occur as Clergy members change positions or occupations. However, the demand for Roman Catholic Priests is expected to remain high as shortages of clergy in this religion continue.”

Michigan Department of Career Development: Working conditions for members of the clergy depend on the type of work they do. Most Clergy work under little supervision and plan their schedules according to the needs of their congregations. Some serve large congregations that may be more structured. Physical surroundings vary widely. Clergy members may serve large congregations housed in well-equipped buildings or may serve very small or new congregations housed in limited facilities. In rural areas, Clergy members may serve two or more congregations. Some of their time is spent in quiet studies, offices, or libraries to prepare sermons or public speeches. Also, they may visit people in their homes, hospitals, prisons, and various other places where conditions may be depressing. In emergencies, Clergy may be required to go out during all kinds of weather. They may work in the country, suburbs, and cities as well as undeveloped areas of foreign countries.

Clergy members may work long and irregular schedules. Pastors, ministers, and rabbis may be called at any time of the day or night to respond to situations such as medical emergencies or personal problems. They may be called back from vacations and holidays. Work weeks of 50 to 80 hours are not uncommon. Clergy who work for governmental institutions, private organizations, or educational institutions may have more regular schedules. Depending upon denomination, some Clergy promise celibacy and do not marry. Experience as an assistant may be required before being allowed to take charge of a congregation. Doub, Jim: The salary of a local pastor in Calvary Chapel is determined by the Board of Elders. When starting a new ministry a pastor will often work outside in a "secular" job to pay his way until the church has grown financially to the point it can afford a full time paid minister. The board usually tries to pay the pastor enough so that the church is not a financial burden but he should never be paid in such a way as to be seen as "fleecing" the flock. (I Timothy 5:17-18)

In addition to salaries, Clergy often receive other types of compensation. They often receive fees for performing religious ceremonies associated with birth, marriage, and death. According to current Federal and State Income Tax laws, much of their income is tax exempt.

Most Clergy Members are supplied with either living quarters or a housing allowance by their congregations. Utility bills may be paid and car or travel expenses may be reimbursed. Doub, Jim: Until the Lord takes us "home" we are here to serve! There will always be a place to serve Him! This is not like working for the telephone company, which I did for 30 years, it is up to God when a person should step down from the full time ministry but serving nevers ends.

There will be keen competition for Clergy positions in most established Protestant congregations. Favorable employment opportunities are expected for Rabbis, especially for those who seek work in congregations particularly in small communities and with large groups of retirees. The Catholic Church, however, is actively recruiting candidates for the priesthood. This is due to declining enrollment in Roman Catholic seminaries along with an increase in the total Catholic population. Clergy members willing to work in rural areas should have relatively favorable employment opportunities.

About 3,725 Clergy are employed in Michigan. Most worked in urban areas. Most served individual congregations while some taught at colleges, universities, seminaries, or denominational schools; were administrators of churches, mosques, or synagogues, related orphanages, hospitals, and social agencies, worked in the military, prisons, or hospitals.

Employment of Clergy in Michigan is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through the year 2005. An average of 130 annual openings is expected, with 60 due to growth and 70 due to replacement of clergy who retire, die or leave the active ministry for other reasons. Additional openings may occur as Clergy members change positions or occupations. However, the demand for Roman Catholic Priests is expected to remain high as shortages of clergy in this religion continue.

I can't believe how fast the semester has gone by, it seems like it just started and already we are wrapping up the semester.  My first semester has been very pleasant.  My first two teachers that I have had in college have been wonderful.  I like them, they each great, and really want us to learn the material.  I am looking forward to future classes and more learning.

Which Style Do You Use To Learn?

Contrary to what people think, everyone does learn differently. Each person has to use a different learning style such as, hearing the teaching, reading the material, learn from talking about the material with other students, and seeing the lecture on the dry erase-board. Some people even have to use more than one learning style to understand the material. Some people are creative thinkers and these type of people will learn differently than those who are more logical thinkers. Teachers and students both need to know about the different learning styles in order for a student to learn the most at school.
In contrast to having several learning styles, some say that people do not learn in different styles, but rather, people learn in the same way and in so making everyone into one mold. They say if a person doesn’t learn the way they say a person should, then the person has a learning disability. If you do not understand the material the way the school says a person has to learn it than there’s something is wrong with you. If you take a test and do poorly then it has to be that you don’t know the material and something must be something wrong with you.
According to David Kolb, people develop preferences for different learning styles in the same way that they develop any other sort of style, for example: management, leadership, negotiating, etc (Par. 1). He found that the four combinations of perceiving and processing determine the four learning styles. The learning cycle involves four processes that must be present for learning to occur: 1) Activist - Active Experimentation (simulations, case study, homework); Training approach - Problem solving, small group discussions, peer feedback, and homework all helpful, 2) Reflector - Reflective Observation (logs, journals, brainstorming); Training approach - Lectures are helpful; trainer should provide expert interpretation, 3) Theorist - Abstract Conceptualization (lecture, papers, analogies); Training approach - Case studies, theory readings and thinking alone helps; almost everything else, including talking with experts, is not helpful, 4) Pragmatist - Concrete Experience (laboratories, field work, observations); Training approach - Peer feedback is helpful; activities should apply skills; trainer is coach/helper for a self-directed autonomous learner (Par. 2), this information can be found at David Kolb’s webpage.
Dr. Rita Dunn and Dr. Kenneth Dunn define learning styles, in an article Dunn and Dunn, as the way in which an individual learner begins to concentrate on, process, and retain new difficult material. It is a combination of many biological and experiential characteristics that work on their own or together as a unit to contribute to learning. This interaction with new information is unique for each individual (Par. 1). The Dunn and Dunn Learning Style Model contains five variables that affect learners and their ability to learn. Since learners are affected by their immediate environment, own emotionality, sociological preferences, physiological characteristics, and processing inclinations, these variables must be considered when creating instruction that is effective for individual learners. Individual learning styles make identical instruction effective for some students and ineffective for others (Par. 2). Since the learning style factors identified by Dunn and Dunn are conditions external to the learner, they have a greater effect on external instructional conditions rather than the learner’s internal learning strategies. The structure of the learning environment and the sequencing and introduction of instruction should be matched to each individual child’s learning style. Research has also shown that higher grade point averages are achieved when there is a close match between students’ learning styles and their teachers’ teaching styles (Par. 4). Further studies have revealed that when students’ characteristics were accommodated by an instructional process that was responsive to their learning style, achievement scores could be expected to be seventy-five percent of one standard deviation higher than for students whose learning styles weren’t accommodated. Given the attention to failing and poorly achieving students in the United States, accommodating individual learning styles has important implications for our educational system (Shaughnessy, 1998) (Par. 5).
I have found right in my own family that each person has a different style of learning. My mother has to hear the material, she has to read the material out loud and then will understand it. My sister-in-law also learns by hearing the material, she learns by going to the lectures and hearing the teacher explain the material. My brother is visual, he can go to lectures and then can just close his eyes and see the board when taking a test. My father uses multiple learning styles, he reads the material, touches the bones (he’s going through class that will go towards medical classes) and then makes an outline of the chapter to learn the material. I myself also have to use multiple styles of learning, I have to go to the lectures and listen/watch the teacher explain the material and then read the material myself to understand it.
Kolb, the Dunns, and myself all show that everyone has a different learning style that we need to allow to be used for the student to get the best learning. People develop different learning styles and preferences such as my family has shown.
In conclusion, my family members are a perfect example of Dunn and Dunn’s teachings of the learning styles as the way a learner begins to concentrate on, process, and retain new and difficult material. Everyone needs to use a different style of learning and schools have to start realizing this. Unfortuently there are still schools, including colleges, that have not come to this understanding and still believe that if you don’t learn by listening to the lecture and understand it, then there must be something wrong with you. In reality, there isn’t anything wrong with the person, we just learn differently.

Happy

Hey everyone, I made a post saying how I was nervous about my first paper for English and I was worried about my first test for my Natural Resources, because this is my first semester in college.  Well, I got a B in English and I got an A in my Natural Resources Class.....whoa.  I'M SOOOO HAPPY!!!!...Wow.

Definition Essay

Wow, I'm trying to put my ideas together in an outline right now.  I think having to do it in class is going to be a little difficult.  I write it out, then make changes, read it again, make changes, and do that a few times to make sure it's just right...but in class like that I won't be able to do that...mmm.  It's ok, I've had to do one to get my GED and at the beginning of the English Class, so I'm sure I can do it again...we'll see.

A little info about myself....

I'm going to C.O.D. for a 2 yr. degree...most likely in Liberal Arts so that no matter what job I go for in the future it will go for it.  If I got a specific degree then it won't be good for certain jobs, so that's my reasons for that.  Next, I'm currently in English-051, Conservation Natural Resources, and the lab that goes with it.  I am thinking about taking either Math-54 or Intro to Administration of Justice during the Summer Intersession, depending on which one is available and all.  The Administration of Justice would count for my "Sociology & Criminology area of my degree."

Ok...so I'm back.  The test went pretty good I think.  We'll see when the teacher gives me back the results though :-/.

I'm still new to college, I started college on Jan. 26 of this semester, this is my first test in college, but I think it's fun...I like the studying, the learning, the class time, and all...fun fun fun!

4) Logical Order.
5) Define Terms--Define your terms and explain equipment.
6) lastly, in conc, tell us again what we can now do...but don't use the word "should" in the closing paragraph.  It's as if you are telling them they HAVE TO do it.

Three, Two, One The Paper’s Done

   Contrary to what people think, writing a paper can be fun. Researching something that you enjoy, learning more about it, and bringing all the information that you have found together to make one paper can be interesting, but the way a person goes about doing it can ruin the fun. In five easy steps you can write an essay and enjoy it.
   Begin by brainstorming and picking a topic that interests you most, not just what you think will give you a good grade. If you have no interest in what you are going to write about then you won’t care as much and won’t do as well. If you enjoy what you are writing about you will want to study about it more and in-so-doing will do better on your essay. Even if you are given the topic, find something in it that interests you about it and write your essay. This is a very important step to it being enjoyable.
   Once you have decided on a topic that interests you, write an outline or use one of the many Prewriting Techniques, which would include: Listing, Freewriting, Looping, Boomerang, Clustering, Cubing, Interviewing, or Cross-Examination. If you haven’t figured out which technique works best for you yet don’t get frustrated, you will, just look at the different techniques and see which one is best for you. If you think you have to use more than one technique then do it, whatever works for you to write your essay is just fine.
   After you have picked a topic and have used either an outline or a Prewriting Technique to get things in order, the third step is to write your first draft out. Write it not worried about how you spell every word, just write out a simple draft, if you are not comfortable with it then make changes and rewrite it if necessary. Once you have written your first draft and you are comfortable with it, then go back and make corrections of misspelled words, capitalzation, and end marks. You’ll notice that as you go from your first draft to your second and so on you are actually fixing more and more things
   Once you are comfortable with what you have written, corrections have been made, and it is writen to the point it is almost available to hand in, go ahead and have a friend, a tutor, or a fellow student look at your essay and make suggestions. It’s good to have a few people look at your essay because it is easy to miss something and the second person might catch errors that the first person didn’t. My personnal advice is to have two tutors and either a friend or fellow student look at your essay, so a total of three people, because that gives you a pretty good chance of at least one of them finding a mistake, if there is one.
   Once you have writen out your essay to the point of it being just about done and you have had at least one or more people check it, the next step is to write your paper, from the draft you have written and the advice you have gotten from the ones you had check it. Now look through it one more time to check for errors, it is always best to have someone check it one more time at the end, just to make sure. You are now ready to hand in your essay.

Playing My Guitar

I have been playing a guitar now for 1 to 2 1/2 years.  I  enjoy learning how to play new chords, which are the hands positions to make different sounds as you play.  It's very challenging to learn where each finger goes and which string they belong to in order to make the right sounds.  I love it when I play for my family and them enjoying it.

Second Draft of Descriptive Essay

Each cookie has a unique smell, appearance, taste, and feel. Some have chocolate, some just have sugar on the top, and some have oatmeal. The Oatmeal Cookie is a wonderful cookie, it is better then any other.

As the cookie is baking, it lets off a wonderful smell of brown sugar and cinnamon mixing with the oats. When the brown sugar and cinnamon heat up they really allow their fragrance to come out and leave your house filled with a sweet smell that everyone will love. The oats being cooked, while they heat up in the oven, brings a smell that lets everyone know exactly what you are making.

The cookie has a beautiful golden brown color. The oats stick out in every direction and make it look like little mountains and valleys over the whole cookie. The raisins stick out just enough for you to know they’re there. And if you desire to put nuts and chocolate chips into the cookie, it makes them have a more full look because of all the additional items.

The taste of the cookie is a mix of brown sugar, white sugar, butter, and cinnamon mixed together with oats. The different types of ingredients so beautifully combine together to make a wonderful taste of sweetness. The oats bringing a nice natural taste to the cookie. And finally the raisins give a nice fruity, freshness to the cookie.

The outside of oatmeal cookies feel rough because of the oats, while the inside is soft. As you bite into it, it has a chewy texture that is just right. The cookie almost melts in your mouth. It has a warm feel as you eat one the way you are supposed to, right from the oven.

This cookie allows a variety of flavors depending on the recipe that you use. Some may put in nuts and raisins, while others may just add chocolate chips. Still some might make it with no additionall items, except the oatmeal. The ways to have an Oatmeal Cookie are endless.

First draft of my descriptive essay

Filled with oats:

3 Purposes of writing:

2)Express Emotion - (diary, telenovla [soap opera] culture)
3)Persuade - rhetoric - (essay/speech).  Seduction through writing/comm.


2 Enemies of Good Unity

P/C - Society/ Culture wants you to follow its unwritten rules (and written!) on how to act and write.

Ethnountnism - the belief that your culture/ethnic group is superior to others. 


If you get info from somewhere and write it in your essay, say where you got it from.


Thesis

Main point for essay.

T.S. - should be focused and be on one topic.

T.S. - your opinion on it.  You put your facts in your paper.

T.S. - is an answer to a question.

T.S. - something worthwhile to say.

T.S. - limited to fit the assignment.
